The overhaul of the physics engine has caused updates to the game to slow significantly. ĭue to the lack of publisher support, the development team provided early access to the game via pre-orders on the official Next Car Game website as well as Steam Early Access and also created a Kickstarter campaign as alternate means of raising revenue in order to develop the game. In a press release published by Eurogamer, Next Car Game was officially announced for PC. In an interview with IGN, lead game designer Janne Suur-Näkki stated that the game should reach a "feature-complete state" in 2014, with all key features implemented. Development ĭevelopment on Wreckfest began in 2012 under the working title Next Car Game, and was first announced by Bugbear Entertainment on the Next Car Game blog in August 2013. While Wreckfest's focus on physics and vehicular damage is similar to previous destruction-based racing games such as Criterion's Burnout, it follows a somewhat slower and more strategic approach, resulting in a more traditional racing gameplay experience than in comparable games. The races themselves focus heavily on "vehicular combat", where players have to find a balance between defensive tactics such as avoiding or blocking opponents and more aggressive tactics such as ramming opponents and shunting them into barriers to put them out of the race and earn points. The game features three modes: career, multiplayer and custom events. Players are also able to buy and sell vehicles, customise vehicles, and perform upgrades. Before participating in an event, the player is allowed to choose a vehicle, select from a variety of assist levels (whether to use a manual or automatic transmission, ABS, AI difficulty, etc.). The player controls a car in a race or demolition derby, the goal being to win the race or be the sole survivor of the derby respectively. The racing gameplay follows the same fundamental rules as most modern racing games, such as Need for Speed or Gran Turismo. The game includes a variety of gameplay features, namely banger racing and demolition derby. A mobile port was released 14 November 2022. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions were released in 2021, while a Nintendo Switch version was released in 2022. A notable feature of the game engine is the use of soft-body damage modelling, which enables location-based damage that affects the driving dynamics of vehicles in a realistic fashion.Īfter a four-year long early access phase during which the game was called Next Car Game, the Windows version was released in June 2018, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions released in August 2019 after multiple delays. Wreckfest is described as the spiritual successor to the FlatOut series and a cross between FlatOut, Destruction Derby and cult 1989 PC racer Street Rod. Wreckfest is a racing video game developed by Bugbear Entertainment and published by THQ Nordic.

Officer's rank insignia consisted of lacing on the sleeves in the same manner as on the blue uniform, while CPOs wore rank insignia pins on the lapels of the jacket. Women previously wore a uniform similar to the Service Dress Blue uniform but with a white coat and skirt or trousers. The white combination cap is the prescribed headgear. The material, formerly cotton, today is a weave of polyester known as "Certified Navy Twill". This uniform is informally called "chokers" due to the standing collar. Men wear a high stand-collared white tunic, with shoulder boards for officers or metal anchor collar devices for CPOs, white trousers, and white shoes. The Service Dress White uniform was different for men and women until 2017. The prescribed headgear is a white combination cap, although a navy blue garrison cap is optional in some situations when the jacket is not worn, unless stated otherwise by the prescribing authority. Rank insignia are gold sleeve stripes for commissioned officers, while rating badges and service stripes are worn on the left sleeve by chief petty officers (CPOs). The men's jacket is double-breasted with six gold-colored buttons, and the women's jacket single breasted with a single row of four gold-colored buttons. The material is generally wool or a wool blend, depending on the vendor. The Service Dress Blue (SDB) uniform consists of a dark navy blue suit coat and trousers (or optional skirt for women) that are nearly black in color, a white shirt, and a black four-in-hand necktie for men or a neck tab for women. They are also commonly worn when traveling in official capacity, or when reporting to a command. Service dress uniforms are worn for official functions not rising to the level of full or dinner dress. The United States Navy has three categories of dress uniforms, from least to most formal: service, full, and dinner dress. There are much better and more interesting ways nowadays to approach the same ideas. Maybe some people are happy about that, but I think progress in any creative medium is important and should always be reflected upon.įor example, even though the new Doom games aren't exactly remakes, the developers knew better than to follow the old map design philosophies, having players navigating through endless mazes and mashing buttons against walls to discover secrets. I don't want to berate the developers too harshly until I see the full game, but it's a bit disappointing they're going for a 1:1 remake instead of reimagining. I can't say I'm ecstatic over what I played, but a big part of that is how the map design soured my experience. After the long hiatus and development troubles though, I sort of tuned out in disappointment until recently when I learned a demo was out. It felt very System Shock 2, and seeing how so few developers make immersive sims anymore (bless you Arkane, keep doing what you do), I was pretty excited. I'm actually a backer from when the game was originally kickstarted, and I recall really liking the vibes from the old trailer footage. However, when it came to this demo, I just felt like I was wandering hallways and rooms that could have been randomly generated in any order and I likely wouldn't have noticed a difference.Īnyone else feel this way, or was I just a fool to expect a more updated design of the old foundation? The environments tell stories without even a single word. Games like Bioshock or Prey 2017 absolutely nail this kind of atmosphere and world building. I would have much rather seen a logical layout, to feel like I'm in an environment that could exist, that had people working day in and day out, and whose lives have been affected by what's happening. For some, perhaps that's a good thing, but game design has come a long, long way - and for good reason. It seems like the developers are emulating the old map layouts just for the sake of being faithful. I'm all for old fashion design but it needs to serve a purpose, and in this case I really don't see it. Worse more is that the visual palette is so similar between each of the four quadrants (and every room in general) that it was difficult to make out where I was and where my objective could be. A tiny compartment hidden in a wall that seemingly has no in-world use. Random balconies that have no purpose (and don't even have a proper entry/exit point) except to have a Cyborg Assassin posted up to shoot you. If this was just an odd occurrence, it probably wouldn't have stood out so much, but the map is filled with this nonsensical design. What's the point of this? There's no visual or environmental storytelling, no items to collect, it's just a dead end room. Why? There was another room at the end of a hallway in the Beta quadrant, filled with toxic barrels, a dead body. I climbed up a tall ladder in the maintenance pipes just to get to a dead-end platform that had one dead body and a medical patch lying on the floor. The entire floor is a gigantic maze just for the sake of being one. The design of the hallways and rooms is completely illogical and lacks any kind of motivation. Navigating through the environments felt headache inducing, and it would be an absolute slog if the rest of the ship was laid out this way. I suppose some of it falls into nostalgia of the original title (I played System Shock 2, but not the original), but to me it seems incredibly antiquated - and I don't mean that in a good way. However, the most concerning issue for me was map design. It is an Alpha, so of course I expected rough edges. There's some things about it that I thoroughly enjoyed, and other things that definitely need some work. I recently played the System Shock Remake Demo that is up on GOG. |
